The Friars started the week right where they left off! On Tuesday night, Providence headed north to Boston, where they took on the Northeastern University Huskies. Providence came out flying as they created two great chances in the first five minutes of the game. They were able to convert on one in the third minute of the match. An errant clearance from the Northeastern keeper found Wilder Arboleda who chested the ball down to a jetting Matt Marcin, who was able to squeeze through two defenders and fire a low shot into the lower left corner of the goal. The Friars dominated the first twenty minutes of the game. They spread the field well, kept the ball and found each other in great spots all over the field. The rest of the game became a bit of a back and forth track meet. There were not many great chances created for either side as the game became more of a war of attrition. The Friars were able to hang on to the 1-0 victory thanks to a strong defensive performance and some great saves from Jhojan Obando. One in particular stood out; with seven minutes left on the clock Northeastern made a move coming forward switching the ball from left to right. Their right midfielder ended up with the ball on our corner of the six with just Obando to beat. Obando came up huge with a save that he somehow managed to tap over the bar, a save that sealed the Friars fate as victors. It is never easy to win away from home, especially against a highly athletic and motivated team such as Northeastern.
The following Saturday afternoon, the Friars opened their Big East season with a tough test, as the Louisville Cardinals came into town. Louisville was ranked eighth in the national college soccer rankings at the time. The Friars started strong, connecting many combinations and controlling the flow of the game for the first twenty minutes. Providence got on the score sheet early. Dan Fabian played a lofted cross from the right side of the eighteen yard box that found the left foot of Matt Marcin who volleyed it straight out of the air and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The game went back and forth from there until close to the 40th minute when in an unlucky turn, a Louisville free kick was deflected off a Providence defender and into the net, knotting the game at one. The second half was much of the same. The Friars fought hard against a very athletic, very strong and very well organized opponent. Louisville got a couple chances on the counter attack that were thwarted by great saves from Jhojan Obando. In the 76th minute, Louisville broke through again and scored to put themselves on top for good. Louisville received a red card with ten minutes to go, so the Friars changed their tactics to put on the pressure. They pressed and pressed but could not find an equalizer. The game ended 2-1 in Louisville's favor.
The Friars have impressed me with the way they are capable of playing. They have gotten better every week which is a great thing considering they want to continually progress as the season continues and find their peak later in the season. Playing a top 10 team in the country is never easy. Providence proved over the weekend that they can compete and can get results against any team in the country. This is something that, even though they lost, they can take as a positive from the weekend's outcome. This week they head to Boston to take on another top twenty team, the Crimson of Harvard University. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Friars to recover from the past weekend with an important win over a tough opponent.
