The Providence College men's soccer team will return to its home pitch for the first time in two weeks when it hosts Sacred Heart on Wednesday, September 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field.
Providence (1-1-1) is looking to bounce back after a 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 23 Michigan State on Thursday, September 9 in East Lansing, Mich. The Friars, who played with 10 men in the second half, created more scoring chances and had more possession in the final 45 minutes, but could not score. It marked Providence's first match ever against a team from the Big Ten Conference. Freshman Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) continues to lead the team in scoring with two goals for four points, while red-shirt junior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) has started all three matches in goal.
Sacred Heart (4-0) comes into Wednesday's match with an unblemished record after a 2-1 overtime win at Adelphi on Saturday, September 11. Brian Francolini scored the match winner in the 96th minute to lift the Pioneers, who also have defeated Holy Cross, Columbia and Siena. Marcello Castro leads the team in scoring with three goals and one assist, while Francolini is second with one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper Alex Fait has started all four matches and has yielded just three goals.
Last season, Providence defeated Sacred Heart, 1-0, in double overtime in the season opener in Fairfield, Conn. The Friars are 11-0-1 all-time against Sacred Heart, including a victory in five consecutive seasons.
