PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence softball team was defeated by Louisville, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game played at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I.

Louisville (24-12, 4-2 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead when Chelsea Bemis hit a one-out, solo home run in the second inning. Providence (8-16, 2-3 BIG EAST) had a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but could not convert. Seniors Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) and Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) accounted for PC's two hits. Louisville pitchers Tori Collins and Kristen Wadwell combined to pitch the shutout. Wadwell earned the win as she pitched the last four innings, did not allow a hit and struck out three batters. PC freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) had a strong outing as she threw a complete game, allowed three runs and struck out five batters.

Melissa Roth hit a two-out, two-run home run in the seventh inning to seal the win for the Cardinals and complete the three-game series sweep. Roth finished with two hits for Louisville.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, April 7 with a doubleheader at Yale beginning at 2:30 p.m.
