PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against USF, 1-2 and 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Raymond Field. The 6-3 win in game two marked PC's first ever win in 11 tries against USF.
USF (19-20, 4-4 BIG EAST) won game one, 2-1. The Bulls took the lead in the second inning when Kendall Arnold hit a two-run home run. Providence (14-21, 4-6 BIG EAST) scored its only run of the game in the seventh inning when junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) hit a one-out home run to cut the lead to 2-1. It marked Stratton's team-leading third home run of the season. USF's Lindsey Richardson earned the win as she pitched over six innings, allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five batters. Capri Catalano retired the last two hitters to earn the save. PC freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) threw all seven innings, allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five batters.
Providence rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 6-3 victory in game two. The Bulls scored two unearned runs in the first inning to jump ahead. The Friars cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning when Stratton singled to drive in senior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.). In the fifth inning, sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a home run to even the score (2-2). It marked Huber's second home run of the season.
Providence then broke the tie with four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead for good (6-2). The Friars loaded the bases before junior Ava Pandiani (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drew a walk to force in senior Julie Fowler (Langley, B.C.) who pinch ran for classmate Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.). Revens then hit a two-run single to increase the lead to 5-2. Pandiani eventually came around to score on a wild pitch as the Friars went into the seventh inning with a four-run lead. Stormi Grzybek led off the seventh inning with a home run to trim the lead to 6-3, but PC sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) retired the next three batters to seal the win. Grosso pitched all seven innings and allowed just one earned run. Stratton finished with four hits and two RBIs in the two games as she extended her hit streak to five contests.
The two teams will complete the three-game series with a single game on Sunday, April 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Raymond Field.
