SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Syracuse, 1-11, 7-6, Saturday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse (18-16, 4-3 BIG EAST) took the first game by a score of 11-1 in five innings. The Orange loaded the bases with two outs in the first inning and scored three times to take a 3-0 lead. Providence (12-17, 3-4 BIG EAST) pulled to within, 3-1, in the third inning when senior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.) singled to drive in sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) who drew a one-out and then stole second base. However, Syracuse responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to add to its lead (7-1). Rachel Helman capped off the inning with a two-out double that scored two runs. The Orange scored four more runs in the fourth inning as it loaded the bases and Stacy Kuwik hit a double to drive in three runs.

In game two, Providence held on for a 7-6 victory. The Friars took a 3-0 lead after half an inning as sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) singled to drive in one run, while senior Teresa Bertels (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) doubled to score two runs. The Orange scored twice in the bottom half of the first inning as Stephanie Watts hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-2. Syracuse then scored a run in the second inning to even the score (3-3). Junior Justine Stratton (Fresno, Calif.) broke the tie in the third inning as she hammered a two-run home run to give the Friars a 5-3 edge. It marked Stratton's second home run of the season. Kuwik then hit an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning to trim PC's lead to 5-4.

Providence again responded in the fourth inning when Abrams drove in two runs with a single as the lead grew to 7-4. Syracuse scored one run in the fifth and sixth inning to cut the lead to 7-6. The Orange also had a runner at third base with two outs in the seventh inning, but could not score. PC freshman pitcher Corinne Clauss (Davie, Calif.) went the distance as she allowed five earned runs and struck out five batters to collect her fourth win of the season. Abrams finished with two hits and three RBIs, Stratton had two hits and two RBIs, while Bertels recorded one hit and two RBIs for the Friars, who have won four of their last five games.

The two teams will complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday, April 11 at noon in Syracuse, N.Y.
