ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by UCF, 6-1, on Saturday, March 6 at the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
UCF (10-8) took a 3-0 first inning lead when Arielle Palafox hit a three-run home run. Providence (4-11) pulled to within, 3-1, in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) hit an RBI single to plate classmate Megan McCann (Hopkinton, Mass.), who led off with a bunt single. However, the Knights responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Ashleigh Cole hit a two-run single. UCF added another run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
Providence finished with the advantage in hits (7-6) as seven different players had one hit each. The Friars pitching staff of senior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calf.) and freshman Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) allowed two earned runs on six hits and totaled seven strikeouts.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, March 7 when they face the College of Charleston in the final day of the UCF Tournament.
