Softball Defeats College of Charleston, 7-2, At UCF Tournament

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College softball team scored four first-inning runs and never looked back en route to a 7-2 victory over the College of Charleston on Sunday, March 7 in the final day of the UCF Tournament in Orlando, Fla.

In the first inning, sophomore Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) and senior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) each drove in a run with a double as the Friars jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Abrams also had an RBI single in the second inning to increase PC's lead to 5-0. In the bottom half of the second inning, the Cougars pulled to within, 5-2, as they loaded the bases and Erica Kaufman walked to force in a run, while Kristie Shifflett drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.

Providence regained its five-run lead (7-2) in the fourth inning when sophomore Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit an RBI triple and Huber eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Abrams. Abrams finished with three hits, one run and three RBIs, while Garcia had two hits, one run and one RBI for the Friars who outhit the Cougars, 11-5.

In the pitcher's circle, sophomore Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned her third win of the season as she pitched six innings, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six batters.

Providence finished the UCF Tournament with a 2-3 record and improved to 5-11 on the season. The College of Charleston posted a 1-4 mark in the Tournament and is now 6-12 overall.

The Friars return to action on Friday, March 12 when they face UNC-Wilmington at the Winthrop Adidas Classic in Rock Hill, S.C.
