Providence, R.I. - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (2-3, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College field hockey team who has the fourth toughest schedule in the nation, will face two top-10 team's this weekend as it hosts No. 6 Connecticut on Saturday, September 19 at 1:00 p.m. followed by No. 4 Princeton on Sunday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. Both games will take place at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.
The Friars are coming off a 3-2 loss against Northeastern on Wednesday, September 16. Trailing by one goal early in the second half, Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) knotted the game at 1-1 when she was able to score her team leading sixth goal of the season. Poulin has 12 points on the year and is eight points shy of 100. The shot was a deflection off a pass from freshman Nicole Fernandez (Shrewsbury, Mass.) who recorded her second assist of the season. The Friars fell behind again but a shot from the top of the circle by Ashlyn Hudson, (Stoughton, Mass.) tied the match. A late goal by Northeastern put the Huskies over the top and dropped the Friars to 2-3 on the season.
Despite being out shot by opponents on the year, the Friars still hold an 11-9 advantage in goals.
Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) has a 2.00 goals against average with a .758 save percentage on the season. The Friars look to rebound on Saturday when they open BIG EAST Conference play against rival No. 6 Connecticut. During last years contest the Friars were defeated 2-1 in an overtime matchup in Storrs, Conn. A day later the Friars will return to action against No. 4 Princeton. Last year the Frairs were defeated by Princeton on the road 2-0.
UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT (6-0, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Connecticut field hockey team enters Saturday's matchup with a 6-0 record. The Huskies most recent win was a 5-2 victory over Drexel on Thursday, September. Sophomore Ali Blankmeyer helped the Huskies win, providing three goals, which marked her first career hat-trick. Senior Loren Sherer has led the Huskies to a 6-0 start with her team best 21 points coming on eight goals and five assists. The BIG EAST Conference has honored Sherer with three consecutive Offensive Player of The Week awards to open the 2009 season. Connecticut has dominated opponents in shots, 115-33. Goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero enters the weekend with a 0.84 goals against average and a .810 save percentage.
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY (4-0, 0-0 IVY LEAGUE): The Princeton Tigers have opened the season with four-consecutive wins. Their most recent win came in a 4-1 victory over Richmond. Senior Christina Bortz let the Tigers with her first two goals of the season. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer King recorded five saves for her fourth win. Sophomore forward Kathleen Sharkey leads the Tigers in points this season with 12. Princeton has been able to dominate in shots taken, doubling up on their opponents, 86-43. The Tigers opened the 2009 season ranked seventh and have been able to move up to No. 4 in the national poll. The Tigers will face Dartmouth College on Saturday, September 19 before they meet the Friars on Sunday September, 20.
