Men's Soccer To Host Northeastern On Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will look to return to its winning ways when it hosts Northeastern University on Saturday, September 12 at 1:00 p.m at Glay Field.

Providence (2-1) is coming off a 3-0 loss at 14th-ranked Boston University on Monday, September 7. Providence won its first two games by identical 1-0 scores to start the season. PC defeated Sacred Heart on Tuesday, September 1 in Fairfield, Conn. as senior forward Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) scored the lone goal of the match with 1:47 remaining in double overtime. Ritter also scored in a 1-0 home-opening victory over Holy Cross on Saturday, September 5. PC goalkeeper Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) combined for 11 saves in the two games to record his school record 19th and 20th career shutouts. For their efforts, Ritter was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Murray was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.

Northeastern (1-1) will play its third consecutive road match to start the season when it travels to Providence on Saturday. In their last contest, the Huskies were defeated at 10th-ranked Dartmouth, 1-0, on Sunday, September 6. Prior to that, Northeastern posted a 1-0 overtime victory at Albany on Tuesday, September 1. Mike Kennedy scored in the 96th minute and Mike Gallagher made seven saves to lead the Huskies. Northeastern is coached by Brian Ainscough, who served as the Friar head coach from 1995-99. Current Friar head coach Chaka Daley served as an assistant coach under Ainscough at PC.

Providence leads the all-time series between the two teams, 11-1-1. The lone tie in the series came last season when the two teams battled to a scoreless draw in Boston on September 15. The last time these two teams met in Providence, Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) who was a freshman at the time, scored in the 74th minute to lead the Friars to a 1-0 win.
