PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will open the 2009 season on Tuesday, September 1 at Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m. It will mark the fourth-consecutive season and the fifth overall that the Friars will kick off their season against the Pioneers. Providence is 10-0-1 all-time against Sacred Heart.

The Friars, who have won four consecutive season openers, come into this year after posting a 9-7-3 record in 2009, including a 5-5-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The Friars advanced to the league quarterfinals, but just missed out on a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. However, 10-year head coach Chaka Daley guided his squad to its fourth consecutive winning season, a feat that had not been accomplished since 1984-87. The Friars posted victories over three ranked teams, including No. 10 Connecticut. It marked PC's first win over UConn since 1997. The Friars also posted wins over fourth ranked Boston College and 20th-ranked Georgetown.

Providence returns nine starters from last season's team, including graduate students Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.) and Roy Sandeman (Edinburgh, Scotland), seniors Justin Kahle (Oceanport, N.J.) and Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) as well as juniors Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) and Michael Pereira (London, Ontario). Murray started all 19 games in goal for the Friars and recorded 10 shutouts, while Sandeman played in seven games at midfield before sustaining a season-ending injury. Kahle started all 19 games for PC as a defender and Ritter led the Friars in scoring with five goals and four assists. Marcin led the Friars with two game-winning goals in the Friar midfield, while Pereira played in 18 games and recorded one goal.

Sacred Heart posted a 7-7-3 overall record last season, including a 4-3-2 mark in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers, who were picked to finish seventh in the NEC preseason coaches' poll, return 15 letterwinners from last season's team, including junior Mario Mililli (Shelton, Conn.). Mililli finished with two goals and one assist last season.
