FRESNO, Calif. - The Providence College softball team slugged out 14 hits en route to a 13-5 victory over host Fresno State on Saturday, March 7 in the Bayer CropScience Classic in Fresno, Calif. Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) led the Friars with four hits and drove in five runs. It marked PC's first win over a ranked team since February 17, 2008 when the Friars posted a 4-0 victory over No. 18 Georgia.
Providence (3-9) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings when Sheehy smacked a three-run home run. It marked her first home run of the season. The Friars then put up five runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 8-0. Freshman Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.) hit a bases clearing double, while Sheehy capped off the inning with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs (10-8) scored a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 8-3. However, the Friars responded with two more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by junior Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) and an RBI single by Sheehy to make the score, 10-3. The Friars capped off the scoring with three more runs in the seventh inning.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched six and one-third innings, allowed seven hits and struck out two batters.
In addition to Sheehy, three other Friars recorded multiple hits. Revens, senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) and freshman Jen Abrams (Reading, Mass.) each had two hits. Revens and Huber also finished with three RBIs. For the Bulldogs, Alexis Lujan led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while Mallory Perkins had two hits.
The Friars will play Northern Illinois on Sunday, March 8 in the final day of the Bayer CropScience Classic.
