FRESNO, Calif. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Northern Illinois, 5-4, in the final game of Bayer CropScience Classic Sunday afternoon in Fresno, Calif.

The Friars (3-10) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when sophomore Justine Stratton (Bakersfield, Mass.) hit a triple to drive in junior Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) who reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. However, in the fourth inning, the Huskies (3-9) scored four times to take a 4-1 lead. Katie Colby capped off the inning with a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs.

The Friars pulled to within 4-3 in the fifth inning when senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit a double to drive in two runs. The Huskies added another run in the seventh inning to increase their lead to 5-3. Providence rallied in the bottom half of the inning cut the lead to 5-4 on an RBI groundout by Stratton. PC had the bases loaded but was not able to score the equalizer.
