TAMPA, Fla. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by South Florida Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader in Tampa, Fla. USF posted a 3-1 win in the first game and took the second contest, 6-2.
USF (37-21, 9-5 BIG EAST) scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings en route to a 3-1 triumph in the first game. Alison Savarese hit an RBI single in the second inning, while Danielle Urbanik drove in another run in the third to give USF a 2-0 lead. Providence (22-20, 6-12) cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) led off with her first career triple and came around to score on a single by freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.). However, USF gained its two-run lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Britta Giddens hit an RBI single to make the score, 3-1.
The Bulls used three pitchers in the first game as Kristen Gordon earned the win after pitching two innings in relief. Cristi Ecks was credited with the save by pitching two scoreless innings. For the Friars, senior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched six innings, allowed three runs and struck out two batters. Freshman Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) finished with two hits for PC.
In the second game, USF jumped out to 3-0 first inning lead and went on to win, 6-2. Urbanick and Courtney Mosch each drove in a run the first inning to help the Bulls to a three-run advantage. The lead increased to 4-0 in the second inning as Kit Dunbar hit an RBI single. The Bulls added another run in the fourth inning to make score, 5-0. The Friars cut the lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning as they score twice. PC loaded the bases and freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) was then hit by a pitch to score senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.). Revens then reached on a fielder's choice to drive in PC's second run. USF added another run in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
The Friars used three pitchers as sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) started before giving way to freshman Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.). Sophomore Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) then came in and pitched three innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out two batters. Mosch earned the win as she pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowed two runs on five hits.
The Friars return to action Sunday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m. with a BIG EAST doubleheader at Louisville.
