LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Louisville Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader in Louisville, Ky. Louisville posted a 4-3 win in the first game and captured the second contest, 4-0.
Louisville (30-21, 11-5 BIG EAST) broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning en route to a 4-3 game one win. Providence (22-21-22, 6-14) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) hit a triple to right field to drive in senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.). The Cardinals evened the score in the fourth inning when Kristi Cunningham hit a two-run single. Louisville gained a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning as Sarah Totten grounded out to drive in Brooke McCrain. Bartholomew tied the game in the seventh inning as she led off with a home run to right field. It marked her team leading 10th home run of the season. However, the Cardinals sealed the victory in the bottom half of the seventh when Brittany York hit an RBI single to score Kassie Stanfill, who led off the inning with a double.
PC's Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched six and one-third innings, allowed four runs and struck out two batters. Stanfill earned the win as she pitched four innings of relief, allowed one run on four hits and struck out six batters. For the Friars, Garcia, Bartholomew and Becker each finished with two hits.
The Cardinals recorded a 4-0 victory in the second game. Louisville took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Stanfill scored on a wild pitch and then Totten drove in another run with a ground out to the short stop. Louisville added single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to complete the scoring. For the Friars, junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) had two hits for the Friars. Catherine Bishop earned the win as she pitched a complete game and allowed six hits. PC sophomore Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) started and went four and one-third innings. Sophomore Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) pitched one and two-third innings and allowed just one hit.
