MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Providence College softball team was defeated in a double header at the College of Charleston Tuesday in Charleston, S.C. The Cougars won the first game, 11-3, and took the nightcap, 8-7, in nine innings.
In the first game, the Cougars scored five times in the second inning capped off with a two-run single by Kristie Shifflett. The College of Charleston added another run in the fourth inning before the Friars were able to get on the board in the fifth inning and made the score, 6-1. Sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) drove in PC's run, however, the Cougars scored two more times in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 8-1. In the sixth inning, junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) each drove in single runs to cut the lead to 8-3. However, the Cougars put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs.
The College of Charleston edged Providence, 8-7, in nine innings in the nightcap. The Friars scored four runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead, however, the Cougars rallied with one run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh to tie the game. The Friars regained the lead (8-7) in the eighth inning when freshman Jenna Garcia (Morro Bay, Calif.) doubled to left field to drive in senior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.). However, in the bottom half of the inning CofC rallied again to even the score and won the game in the ninth inning when Kristie Shifflett hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.
Garcia finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs, while Bartholomew and freshman Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) also had two hits. Kristie Shifflett finished with three hits, three runs and three RBIs for the Cougars.
The Friars (4-4) are back in action on Thursday, March 8 when they face Winthrop and Towson at the Winthrop Invitational.
