Men's Soccer Weekend Preview

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team will open its BIG EAST schedule this weekend with a pair of home matches. The Friars will play Villanova on Friday, September 8 at 3:00 p.m at PC's Glay Field. Providence will then battle Rugters on Sunday, September 10 at 2:00 p.m.

Providence was scheduled to play the University of San Diego on Sunday, September 3, however, the match was cancelled because of inclement weather. The Friars (2-1-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) last played on Friday, September 1 at Northeastern, where they recorded a 1-0 victory. Junior Matt O'Donnell (Armonk, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the match in the 30th minute. The goal also marked the first tally of O'Donnell's career. In goal, senior Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) made six saves to earn his first shutout of the season. Juniors Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) and Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) lead the team in scoring with one goal and one assist each.

Villanova (3-1-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) will make a second trip to the Ocean State after playing in the University of Rhode Island Tournament last weekend. The Wildcats played the Rams to a 0-0 draw on September 1, before falling to Harvard, 3-1, on September 3. In the match versus the Crimson, the Wildcats led 1-0 on an early goal by junior forward Mike DelGuercio. Dan McKenna and Victor Faustino lead the team in goals with two each, while Michael Seamon has one goal and three assists for five points, which is the highest mark on the team.

Rutgers (1-2-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) is coming off its first win of the season, defeating Lehigh, 2-0, on Saturday, September 2. Sean Cameron and Charlie Cox each scored for the Scarlet Knights, while Matt Vanoekel stopped the lone shot he faced to earn the shutout. Cameron and Cox lead the team in scoring with one goal each. In their first two games, Rutgers was defeated by the University of San Diego (2-0 on Aug. 25) and by 24th-ranked San Diego State (1-0 in overtime on Aug. 27).
