Emily Ewens Named BIG EAST Offensive Player Of The Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College senior forward Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week for field hockey on Monday, September 4. Senior midfielder/defender Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) was one of five players selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

Ewens helped guide the Friars to a 2-0 record last week with victories over Vermont (5-4) on August 28 and 8th-ranked Michigan (2-1) on September 3. Ewens recorded five points in the two victories on one goal and three assists. In the win over Vermont, Ewens tallied one assist and scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Against the 8th-ranked Wolverines, Ewens had a hand in each of the Friars' two goals with a pair of assists. Ewens is currently tied for the team lead in scoring through three games with five points (one goal, three assists).

Sickel also netted five points on the week with two goals and one assist. In the win over Vermont, she tied the game, 5-5, with her first goal of the season and assisted Ewens on the game-winning goal. In the victory over 8th-ranked Michigan, Sickel scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off a direct shot on a corner.

Providence currently owns a 3-0 record. It marks the Friars' best start in field hockey since the 1997 campaign when the team began the year with eight-straight victories (8-0). PC also is the only remaining unbeaten team in the BIG EAST. The Friars return to action on Wednesday, September 6 against non-conference foe Holy Cross. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
