FRIARS TRAVEL TO ST. JOHN'S... The Friars will seek their fifth consecutive victory when they face St. John's on Sunday, September 17 at 6:00 p.m. in Queens, N.Y. The match will be aired live on ESPNU. Providence is coming off a thrilling 3-2 win over Syracuse on Thursday, September 14 in Syracuse, N.Y. Sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored the match winner with three seconds left in regulation to propel the Friars to the win.
WHAT'S NEXT... Following Sunday's match, the Friars will stay on the road as they will play at Marquette on Saturday, September 23. It will mark the first ever meeting between the Friars and the Golden Eagles.
FRIARS ON FOUR-GAME WINNING STREAK... PC's 3-2 win over Syracuse Thursday night marked the team's fourth straight triumph. The last time the Friars captured four consecutive matches was during the 1999 season. Providence has not won five consecutive matches since 1984 when they won seven straight en route to a 14-2-2 season.
FRIARS OFF TO STRONG START IN THE BIG EAST... Providence has won its first three BIG EAST Conference matches for the first time in school history. Last season, the Friars opened the BIG EAST schedule with a five-game unbeaten streak (2-0-3).
SCOUTING THE RED STORM... St. John's (4-2-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) enters Sunday's match after a 0-0 draw against the University of Connecticut on Thursday, September 14. Jason Landers earned his third shutout of the season in the tie. He ranks second in the BIG EAST with three shutouts. Prior to Thursday's match, St. John's defeated Georgetown, 5-2, as Patrik Engstrom scored twice. Ryan Soroka leads the team in scoring with three goals and three assists, while Engstrom also has three goals.
FRIARS CLIMB TO FIRST PLACE IN THE BIG EAST... With three consecutive victories to open the BIG EAST schedule, the Friars are in sole possession of first place in the BIG EAST Blue Division with nine points. Following the PC win over Syracuse on Thursday, September 14, the Friars had the best overall league record (3-0). In addition, the Friars (5-1) have the second best overall mark among BIG EAST teams.
THE ST. JOHN'S-PROVIDENCE COLLEGE SERIES... In 18 all-time meetings against the Red Storm, the Friars have a 2-15-1 record. PC's last victory over St. John's was during the 1988 season. Last season, the two teams played to a 0-0 draw in Providence accounting for the lone tie in the series. In last season's match, Friar goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) made five saves, while Jason Landers stopped one shot.
MASTER OF SET PIECES... Junior Alex Bury's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) career-high three goals this season have all come on set plays. On August 28, Bury scored on a direct free kick from 20 yards out against the University of Rhode Island. On Friday, September 8, Bury converted a penalty kick in a BIG EAST opening victory over Villanova. His goal proved to be the game winner. Bury also scored on a direct free kick from 18 yards out in a 2-0 triumph over Rutgers on September 10. His three goals lead the team this season.
ROAD WARRIORS... Providence has won its first two road matches this season, including a 3-2 triumph at Syracuse on Thursday, September 14. PC also shutout Northeastern, 1-0, on September 1 in Brookline, Mass. Last season, the Friars posted a 4-3-6 record in matches away from PC's Glay Field.
NEUMEN NAMED BIG EAST DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK... Sophomore Kevin Neumen was BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. Neumen helped lead the Friars to a pair of BIG EAST victories last week. On Friday, September 8, Neumen scored one goal in a 3-1 victory over Villanova in the BIG EAST opener. It marked his second career goal. On Sunday, September 10, he played a key role in the Friars' 2-0 triumph over Rutgers. It marked the first-ever victory for the Friars over the Scarlet Knights. In addition, junior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) were named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
FRIARS SCORE FIRST... In five of its first six matches this season, Providence has scored first. The only match in which the Friars did not strike first was the Syracuse match on Thursday, September 14. The Friars trailed, 1-0, but rallied to defeat the Orange, 3-2.
FRIARS EARN FIRST EVER VICTORY OVER RUTGERS... Two second half goals lifted the Friars to a 2-0 victory over Rutgers on September 10. It marked PC's first ever victory versus the Scarlet Knights. The Friars are now 1-9-1 in 11 all-time meetings against the Scarlet Knights.
SCORING SPURT... The Friars, who scored 27 goals in 20 matches last season, have already scored 14 goals through six contests this season. The PC record for most goals in one season is 60, which was established in 1983. In addition, the Friars already have nine different goal scorers this season, the same amount they had all of last season.
FRIARS NOT WORKING OVERTIME THIS SEASON... After playing in a NCAA record 12 overtime matches and also recording a NCAA mark of nine ties last season, the Friars have not played an overtime match so far this season. Providence came close to going into overtime against the Syracuse Orange on Thursday, September 14, but sophomore Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored the match-winning tally with three seconds left in regulation to lift PC to the win.
A SEASON TO REMEMBER... The Friars finished the 2005 season with a 7-4-9 mark, which represented a 9.5 game improvement from 2004 and the 10th best turnaround in NCAA history. The Friars also advanced to the conference semifinal of the BIG EAST tournament, for the second time in three years, where they tied nationally ranked USF before being eliminated in a penalty kick shootout. PC then earned its second ever NCAA Tournament playoff berth, and first ever NCAA tournament victory by beating 13th ranked Hofstra University. However, their season came to an end when the team was defeated in the second round by the second ranked team in the NCAA tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
