PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- After an impressive 4-1 season-opening victory over Sacred Heart on Friday, the Providence College men's soccer team (1-0) will host the University of Rhode Island (0-0) on Monday, August 28 at 3:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field.

It will mark the 37th all-time meeting between the two rivals with the Rams leading, 24-8-4. Last season, PC and URI played to a 1-1 draw as the Rams came back to tie the match and force overtime. The Friars' last victory (2-1) over URI came on September 9, 2003.

In PC's 4-1 triumph over Sacred Heart, junior Matt Otte (East Lyme, Conn.) gave the Friars a 1-0 halftime lead when he scored in the 40th minute. The lead increased to 2-0 early in the second half when junior Hadrien Toure (Lyon, France) recorded his first goal in a Friar uniform. The Pioneers rebounded right away and cut the lead to 2-1 just 16 seconds later. However, freshman Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) tallied his first collegiate goal, while junior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) added another goal in the 72nd minute to complete the scoring. Maduro also had an assist and senior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) made four saves.

For the Rams, it will mark their 2006 season opener. URI is also coming off a strong 2005 campaign. The Rams (13-8-2) captured their fifth Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament title and earned the program's 10th NCAA Tournament berth. Senior Jeffrey Gonsalves will lead the team this season as he was the squad's top scorer in 2005 with 13 goals and nine assists. Gonsalves along with three other Rams were named to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
