PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team will face Sacred Heart University on Friday, August 25 at 3:00 p.m. in a season-opening match at Glay Field. It will mark the ninth all-time meeting between the two teams with PC leading, 7-0-1. Last season, PC defeated Sacred Heart, 2-0, on September 8.
The Friars, fresh off a NCAA Second Round appearance in 2005, return five starters from last season's team that finished with a 7-4-9 overall record. Last season's team also enjoyed one of its most successful campaigns at PC. Led by reigning NSCAA Division I New England Region Coach of the Year, Chaka Daley, the Friars recorded the 10th best turnaround in NCAA history with a 9.5 game improvement. PC also advanced to the BIG EAST semifinals for the second time in three years and earned the program's second berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars continued to make history as they defeated No. 13 Hofstra, marking the College's first ever NCAA Tournament victory. PC was then eliminated in the second round by second-ranked North Carolina, but finished the season with a No. 25 ranking in the Final RPI ranking.
The 2006 Friars will be led by junior midfielder Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) who finished third on the team with four goals and six assists in his first season at Providence. Senior tri-captain Joseph Weill (Merrick, N.Y.), who has started all but three games in his collegiate career also will be a force in the midfield. In goal, senior tri-captain Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) will backstop the Friar defense after playing in every game last year.
Sacred Heart enters the 2006 season after posting a 7-7-4 record, including a 4-2-3 mark in the Northeast Conference. The Pioneers advanced to the semifinals of the NEC Tournament where they lost, 2-1, in overtime against Monmouth. Sacred Heart is led by sophomore forward Jason Tessitore (Ansonia, Conn.) who was the team's leading scorer last season with eight goals. The Pioneers also return sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England) who started all 18 games in his first year.
