PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on August 10 that the Providence College men's soccer team was picked to finish fourth of eight schools in the BIG EAST Blue Division. The University of Connecticut was picked to win the Blue Division and the University of South Florida was picked to win the Red Division. The voting was done by the league's 16 head coaches.

The Friars return 14 players, including junior Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) who earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors, from the 2005 squad that advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament. Last season, PC earned its first NCAA Tournament win ever when it defeated 13th-ranked Hofstra, 1-0, in overtime in the First Round on November 18, 2005. The Friars magical season came to an end when they were defeated in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at No. 2 North Carolina, 2-0, on November 22, 2005.

The Friars finished 2005 with a 7-4-9 mark and recorded one of the most improved records in NCAA history. The Friars finished 9.5 games better than the 2004 season, which tied the team for the 10th best turnaround in NCAA history.

In BIG EAST play last season, the Friars posted a 3-3-4 mark and placed sixth in the Blue Division. PC also earned its first win in BIG EAST Tournament play since 1984 with a 2-1 victory at Cincinnati on November 2, 2005 in the First Round. The Friars then returned to the BIG EAST Semfinals for the second time in three years as they earned a 2-2 tie at No. 21 Seton Hall and advanced when they won the shootout, 4-2. In the Semifinals, the Friars earned a 0-0 tie against 16th-ranked South Florida, but did not advance to the Finals as they were defeated in the penalty kick shootout, 3-2.

Providence will open the season on Friday, August 25 versus Sacred Heart at Providence College at 3:00 p.m.
