Field Hockey Announces Class of 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Fifth-year Providence College field hockey coach Diane Madl announced on Thursday, June 15 that 10 student-athletes will be joining the program as newcomers in the fall of 2006. It marks the largest recruiting class for the Friars under the guidance of Coach Madl and Assistant Coach Tina Cormier. The class of 2010 spans six states and includes, Sara Casey (East Greenwich, R.I.), Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.), Jennifer Holland (Westport, Conn.), Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.), Megan Montecalvo (Andover, Mass.), Paige Moore (Southbury, Conn.), Kerianne Murphy (Walpole, Mass.), Mary Catherine Ott (St. Louis, Mo.), Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) and Ali Shover (Camp Hill, Pa.).

Casey, a defender, is a local Rhode Island product, who earned three varsity letters in field hockey and track at East Greenwich High School. She is a two-time First-Team All-State and First-Team All-Division selection. In 2003, Casey earned Honorable Mention All-Division honors and earned the Gladys Brightman Sportsmanship Award two-straight years in 2003 and 2004. She helped guide her team to the Rhode Island State Championship game in 2004, where East Greenwich suffered a, 1-0, loss in four overtimes. Named MVP at the Cape Cod Classic and also was selected as a team captain during her senior season at East Greenwich.

Chamberlain, a goalkeeper, was a three-year starter and team captain of her team as a senior in 2005 at Branford High School. Chamberlain earned First Team All-State (2005), All-Conference (2005), Hartford Courant All-State (2004, 2005) and New Haven Register All-Area (2005) honors during her career. She also was named Most Valuable Player of the CIAC Class M State Championship game and MVP of Team East at the CHSCA Senior All-Star game in 2005. Chamberlain also competes on the indoor and outdoor track teams at Branford. She is an All-State performer in the discus (outdoor) and shot put (indoor).

Holland, a goalkeeper, played three seasons of field hockey at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Conn. Holland also participated in equestrian, ice hockey, basketball, softball and lacrosse. As a senior, Holland recorded a 1.13 goals against average and a 0.905 save percentage. She helped guide her team to a 14-4-0 record in 2005 and the Fairchester Athletic League Championship Game. She earned All-League Honorable Mention Honors in 2005 and earned the Most Improved Player Award at Convent of the Sacred Heart.

Marois, a midfielder, played high school field hockey at the Bancroft School and was a three-year team captain (2003, 2004, 2005). Marois was named an Eastern Independent League First-Team All-Star four-straight seasons (2002-2005) and earned EIL Player of the Year honors twice (2003, 2005). She also received the Coaches' Award for great sportsmanship from the Bancroft School. Marois earned further recognition as a Boston Globe All-Scholastic award winner.

Montecalvo, a forward, earned four varsity letters in field hockey and ice hockey at Phillips Academy and was a four-year starter in each sport. She also earned two letters in softball. Guided the field hockey team to three appearances in the NEPSAC Tournament. Earned All-New England honors in field hockey in 2004 and was named Team MVP as a senior in 2005. Was a gold medalist at the 2005 National Field Hockey Festival and was recipient of the Phelps Student-Athlete Scholarship all four years at Phillips Academy.

Moore, a midfielder, is a two-time First-Team All-State selection (2004, 2005) in field hockey at Pomperaug High School and also earned three varsity letters in basketball. During her junior and senior seasons at Pomperaug, Moore scored 95 points on 27 goals and 41 assists. As a senior in 2005, she earned League MVP honors after leading her team to the league title. In 2004, she helped Pomperaug to the league final where it finished as runner-up. In 2002 and 2003, Pomperaug captured the State Championship crown.

Murphy, a midfielder, was a three-year starter for the field hockey and basketball teams at Walpole High School. Murphy is a two-time First-Team All-Star (2004, 2005) and First-Team Daily News Tribune All-Star (2004, 2005). She also earned Boston Globe All-Scholastic and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honors in 2005 and claimed Regional All-American recognition that same year. Murphy helped guide Walpole to the Massachusetts Division I State Field Hockey Championship in 2004 and the South Sectional Championship as a senior in 2005. She also has been a Futures participant since 2001.

Ott, a defender, was a two-sport athlete in field hockey and lacrosse at Villa Duchesne. A captain of the field hockey team as a senior, she is a Second-Team All-Conference and earned Honorable Mention All-Metro (State) honors in 2005. She also earned the Alumnae Award in field hockey (2005, 2006) and also was named an All-Star (2004-2005). Ott has participated in the Futures Developmental Program since 2004 and is a member of Futures Elite (2006). She competed at the National Futures Tournament in 2004 and 2005 and led the St. Louis Stix to the pool championship in 2004.

Poulin, a forward, attended Messalonskee High School from 2001-03 before transferring to St. Mark's School (2003-present). She has earned five varsity letters each in field hockey, ice hockey and softball. During her three-year playing career at St. Mark's, Poulin tallied 51 goals and 21 assists for 123 points. She was a three-time All-League (ISL) selection (2003, 2004, 2005) and earned ISL MVP honors in 2005. She earned the school's William T. White Prize during the 2005-06 academic year as the senior non-captain who makes the biggest contribution to the success of a season in any varsity sport. St. Mark's finished as ISL Runner-up in 2003 and 2005 and earned the ISL Championship in 2004. The team also finished the 2005 campaign as New England Runner-up.

Shover, a forward, was a senior captain and four-year starter on the field hockey team at Camp Hill High School. She also participated in track and field at Camp Hill. Shover is a First-Team All-State selection in field hockey. She also was named All-Sentinel, Patriot News Big 11 and a Mid-Penn All-Star.
