2006 FRIAR FIELD HOCKEY

The 2006 Providence College field hockey team enters the season with a solid core of veteran players, led by a six-member senior class. The senior members of the team comprised Head Coach Diane Madl's first full recruiting class.

Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) and Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) have each earned All-BIG EAST and Regional All-America recognition during their careers. Sickel earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors as a sophomore in 2004 and was selected to the First Team last year in 2005. She also garnered Regional All-America honors twice in her career as a member of the second team in 2004 and first team in 2005. McGow is one of 10 players in program history to record 20 or more goals and 20 or more assists in a career at PC. She is a two-time Regional All-America selection (2003, 2004) and was honored as an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2004. McGow enters her final season with the Friars ranked tied for eighth on PC's all-time scoring list with 76 career points. She also ranks sixth all-time in assists (28) and 12th all-time in goals scored (24). McGow has led the Friars in assists during each of the last two seasons and has been ranked in the top three among her teammates in scoring during each of her three seasons with the team.

Fellow seniors Emily Ewens (Vancouver, B.C.) and Jessica Weinstein (Bridgeton, N.J.) contributed heavily to the Friar offense in 2005. Ewens scored a single-season career high of 18 points on nine goals, while Weinstein added a career-best 11 points on five goals and one assist. Senior defender Noel Mahlstadt (Farmingville, N.Y.) played 14 games for the Friars a year ago and appeared in the starting line up twice. Forward Colleen Walsh (South Easton, Mass.) has been hampered by an injury during much of her playing career at PC, but the staff anticipates that she will be able to contribute more on the field during her senior campaign. She played eight games last season.

Coach Madl is confident that this group of talented and experienced seniors will help the Friars rebound from a disappointing 2005 campaign in which the team finished the season with a 6-13 record. Seven of the Friars' 13 losses were decided by one goal, including two overtime contests.

Providence also returns its leading scorer from a year ago in junior Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.). Maguire netted a career-best 22 points on nine goals and four assists as a sophomore last season. For her efforts she was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and earned Second Team Regional All-America recognition.

The Friars also return two of their three defenders from a season ago along with starting midfielder Kiley Morgart (Mountaintop, Pa.). Sophomore Jessica Lane (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) started each of the team's 19 games last season in the defensive unit. Lane added two goals to the Friar offense. Morgart has started every game of her collegiate career in PC's midfield. Last season she contributed one assist offensively.

Also gaining valuable experience for the Friars was junior Amanda Paquin (Tiverton, R.I.), sophomore Ali Kornfeld (Kingston, Pa.), sophomore Meghan Holden (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Maggie Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass.).

Providence adds 10 newcomers to its roster in 2006. It marks the largest recruiting class for the Friars under the direction of Coach Madl. Members of the class of 2010 include: Sara Casey (East Greenwich, R.I.), Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.), Jennifer Holland (Westport, Conn.), Adrienne Marois (Auburn, Mass.), Megan Montecalvo (Andover, Mass.), Paige Moore (Southbury, Conn.), Kerrianne Murphy (Walpole, Mass.), Mary Catherine Ott (St. Louis, Mo.), Nellie Poulin (Southborough, Mass.) and Ali Shover (Camp Hill, Pa.). Holland and Chamberlain will compete at the goalkeeper position. Poulin and Shover will join the forward line, while Casey, Marois, Montecalvo, Moore, Murphy and Ott will contibute their time and skills to the midfield and defensive units.

SCHEDULE

In 2006, the Friars will resume play on their "newly built" home at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Providence played its inaugural season at the complex in 2005. After a very successful spring season in 2006, Providence is looking forward to the fall and a schedule filled with top-notch opponents. The BIG EAST also announced that Georgetown will begin league play as a field hockey member in 2006, expanding the league schedule to six games.

The schedule features eight opponents who finished among the top-25 in the final STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, including four teams that participated in the 2005 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.

The Friars also will play eight games at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Their home opponents include Michigan (Sept. 3), Monmouth (Sept. 10), Boston University (Sept. 13), Iowa (Sept. 17), Rutgers (Sept. 30), Boston College (Oct. 4), Villanova (Oct. 22) and Connecticut (Oct. 28). PC is scheduled to play Brown University on Warner Roof on the Bears' campus in Providence, R.I. on October 18.

The Friars open the 2006 schedule with a two-game road trip in Burlington, Vt. On August 26, the Friars will face Lock Haven at the University of Vermont, and will follow with a game against Vermont on August 28.

Providence opens the BIG EAST regular-season schedule against Georgetown on September 20 in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas will play their first season as BIG EAST members in the sport of field hockey during the 2006 season. The Friars play their first home league game against Rutgers on September 30 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The top-four teams in the BIG EAST regular-season standings will participate in the 2006 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship on November 4-5 in Louisville, Ky. The winner of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship receives the league's automatic berth to the 2006 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.

FRIAR FIELD HOCKEY & LACROSSE COMPLEX AND FITNESS CENTER

In the fall of 2005, the Providence College community celebrated the opening of the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The field hockey team competed for the first time at the complex on August 28, 2005 against Ohio, in a game the Friars lost, 2-1. Providence earned its first victory on its new home field against Vermont (8-1) on September 3, 2005. Ground breaking for the astroturf facility took place in May of 2004. The multi-million dollar facility also serves as home to the Friar lacrosse program. The field sits atop a one-level, 100-car parking garage.

In May of 2006, Providence broke ground on a state of the art fitness center. Completion of the fitness center is slated for the fall semester of 2007. The fitness center will be the new location for the Friars' varsity weightroom. It will house cardio, nautilus and free weight equipment as well as many of the offices used by the athletic department. The fitness center is being built adjacent to the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
