PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (26-14-1, 9-7) rallied twice to sweep a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against Seton Hall (28-24, 6-12) on Sunday, April 23 at PC's Raymond Field. The Friars won the first game, 5-3, and captured the nightcap, 5-4.

Seton Hall jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, scoring two runs in the second inning and another in the third on a solo home run by sophomore Jenna Best. However, the Friars responded in the bottom half of the third inning when senior captain Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run to center field to make the score, 3-2. It marked Bowers' first home run of the season and the second of her career. The Friars took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when senior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) hit a two-out single that scored two runs. Providence added an insurance run in the sixth inning as junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit an RBI single to right field. Sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) led the Friars with three hits, while Willette and Bartholomew had two hits each.

On the pitcher's circle, junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) allowed three runs through the first three innings, but held the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way as she improved to 16-10. She allowed seven hits and struck out three batters. Seton Hall starter Maura Lund pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed four runs on five hits and posted three strikeouts. Reliever Ashley Arnett allowed one run on five hits and struck out two batters in 2 1/3 innings of action.

Seton Hall took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the second game as senior Katie Pierce hit her eighth home run of the season. Providence again had an answer in the bottom half of the third inning as they scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Willette's double scored one run, while Pittman's single plated two more runs. The Pirates regained the lead (4-3) as they scored three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by junior Akoua Lonergan's two-run home run. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Friars rallied to take a 5-4 lead. Willette led off with a triple to right field and came around to score and tie the game at 4-4 on a sacrifice fly by Pittman. Barthomlomew then followed with her career-high 10th home run of the season to give PC the lead. Bartholomew, who came into the doubleheader on a six-game home run hitting streak, now has a home run in seven out of the last eight games and has at least one hit in 10 consecutive games. She and Willette finished with two hits each, while Pittman had one hit and three RBIs.

Surosky started the second game and went three innings, allowed one run on three hits and struck out one batter. Freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she pitched four innings, allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two batters.
