Softball Rallies Past Boston College, 5-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Boston College, 5-3, on Wednesday, April 26 in a non-conference game at PC's Raymond Field. The Friars improved to 27-14-1, while the Eagles fell to 19-23.

The Eagles took a 3-0 first inning lead as Kimmy Hopkins, Kristen Allain and Jenna Macchi each reached base and came around to score. BC held on to its three-run lead until the fourth inning when the Friars loaded the bases with no outs. BC was able to record two outs with no runs being scored, however, junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) cleared the bases with a two-out double to center field as the Friars tied the game, 3-3. Senior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a double down the left field line to plate Ross and give PC a 4-3 lead.

Junior catcher Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) continued her torrid streak as she went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI to increase her career-high hit streak to 11 games. In addition, she blasted a home run to left field in the fifth inning to complete the scoring for the Friars. Bartholomew, who leads the team with 11 long balls, has now hit a home run in eight of the last nine games. Ross and freshman Mary Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) also had two hits for PC.

On the pitcher's circle, Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned the win as she allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out two batters. Maccio (9-4) held the Eagles scoreless for six straight innings after allowing three runs in the first. For the Eagles, Amanda Klimczak started and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out two batters before being relieved by Savana Lloyd. Lloyd pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowed one run on two hits and posted two strikeouts.

The Friars will return to action on Saturday, April 29 when they play a BIG EAST doubleheader against Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
