PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (24-14-1, 7-7 BIG EAST) split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader against St. John's (23-23, 7-10 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 22 at PC's Raymond Field. St. John's captured the first game, 2-1, in eight innings, but the Friars bounced back with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Friars trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but junior catcher Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) smacked a two-out solo home run to right center to tie the game, 1-1. For Bartholomew, it marked the fifth consecutive game that she has hit a home run. However, Loren Anguiano drove in the game-inning run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to lead the Red Storm to the win. Anguiano drove in both runs for St. John's, while Bartholomew finished with two hits for PC.
Pitching was strong on both sides. Lisa Geer earned the win as she pitched eight innings, allowed one run on four hits and struck out three batters. For the Friars, junior Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) pitched eight innings, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five batters.
The second game featured more strong pitching. Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) led the Friars as she pitched a complete game, allowed just one run on four hits and struck out five batters as she improved to 7-4. For St. John's, Kimberly Lerch pitched seven innings, allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four batters.
The Friars took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on the strength of two solo home runs. Bartholomew continued her torrid home run hitting streak with a blast to left field marking her team-leading ninth homer of the season. She has now hit a home run in six consecutive games. Senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) followed with her seventh homer of the season. The Red Storm pulled to within, 2-1, in the sixth inning when Roxann Struble hit an RBI single to right field. However, the Friars responded in the bottom half of the sixth inning as freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) drove in a run with a single to center field to make the score, 3-1. Rossi finished with three hits in the second game and four overall on the day. Bartholomew had four hits in the doubleheader.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, April 23 at noon with a conference doubleheader versus Seton Hall at PC's Raymond Field.
