NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Providence College (23-13-1) softball team dropped a doubleheader at Yale (27-17) on Wednesday, April 19 in New Haven, Conn. The Friars were defeated, 6-4, in the first game and 9-5 in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI double by freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.). However, Yale scored all of its runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead. Kathleen Edwards capped off the inning for the Bulldogs with a bases-clearing double. The Friars cut the lead to 6-4 in the seventh inning when junior Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) hit a three-run home run. However, PC could not get any closer as pitcher Rebecca Wojciak earned the win by allowing just one earned run. Freshman Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) took the loss as she allowed just one earned run and struck out four batters in three innings of action. Senior Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) and junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) each had two hits for the Friars.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead in the second game as Bartholomew drove in the run with a groundout. The Bulldogs bounced back and scored three runs in the first inning and added two more in the second to take a 6-1 lead. Aracelis Torres hit a two-run home run in each inning to lead the Bulldogs. Bartholomew hit an RBI single in the third inning and the Friars added two more runs in the fourth inning to make the score, 6-4. Bartholomew then belted her second home run (her seventh overall) of the doubleheader in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-5. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the sixth inning to complete the scoring.
PC is back in action on Saturday, April 22 with a BIG EAST doubleheader against St. John's at PC's Raymond Field.
