Softball Wins, Ties Fairfield In Non-Conference Doubleheader

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Providence College softball team defeated Fairfield, 8-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday, April 13 at Fairfield, Conn. The second game was tied, 2-2, after 10 innings and it was stopped because of darkness. The Friars improved to 21-11-1, while the Stags moved to 22-16-1.

In game one action, the Friars took a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning and added three more runs in the sixth inning en route to the win. Freshman Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) led the Friars as she went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Senior Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.), sophomore Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) all finished with two hits. Ross along with senior Tara Sullivan (Tualatin, Ore.) drove in multiple runs. Ross had two RBIs, while Sullivan posted three RBIs.

In the pitcher's circle, Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) earned her second consecutive victory as she went four innings, allowed no runs and struck out four batters to improve to 6-2. Freshman Alisha Levin (Fort Campbell, Ky.) pitched four innings, allowed three runs on three hits and posted four strikeouts.

Maccio pitched all 10 innings of the second game. She allowed just two runs on eight hits and recorded two strikeouts. Fairfield's Cagney Ringnalda also went the distance as she allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out seven batters. The Friars trailed, 2-1, in the seventh inning, but Pittman, who reached base on a single, eventually came around to score the tying run on a wild pitch. Pittman finished with three hits, while Ross had two hits. Senior Michele Bowers (Staten Island, N.Y.) had an RBI single in the fourth inning, which at the time gave PC a 1-0 lead.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, April 15 at noon with a BIG EAST doubleheader versus Connecticut at PC's Raymond Field.
