Field Hockey Announces 2006 Fall Schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Head Field Hockey Coach Diane Madl released the program's 2006 fall schedule on Tuesday, March 28. Eight of the Friars' 20 regular-season games will be played at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I.

The schedule features eight opponents who finished among the top-25 in the final STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, including four teams that participated in the 2005 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. Providence also adds a sixth BIG EAST opponent to the schedule in 2006 with the league's addition of Georgetown as a field hockey member on February 1.

Providence opens the 2006 schedule with two games in Burlington, Vt. On Saturday, August 26, Providence will face Lock Haven on a neutral field, followed by a game with Vermont on Monday, August 28.

The Friars return home to the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex to host Michigan on Sunday, September 3. Michigan finished the 2005 season ranked seventh in the nation and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.

Providence will follow its game against the Wolverines with two road contests vs. Holy Cross and Northeastern. PC's match-up with the Crusaders will take place in Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday, September 6. On Thursday, September 8, the Friars will complete the road trip against Northeastern. The Huskies finished the season ranked 16th nationally. The contest will be played at Wentworth in Boston, Mass.

The Friars begin a three-game homestand against Monmouth on Wednesday, September 10. On Wednesday, September 13, Providence will host Boston University. BU finished the 2005 season 17th in the national poll. Providence finishes its three-game homestand against Iowa on Sunday, September 17. The Hawkeyes finished the season ranked 14th in the nation a year ago.

On Wednesday, September 20, the Friars will square off against Georgetown in the BIG EAST Conference opener in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas joined the league for field hockey on February 1, 2006. Providence stays out on the road for two non-conference games against Maine on Saturday, September 23 and Harvard on Wednesday, September 27. PC will face the Black Bears in Orono, Maine. The game between Harvard and Providence will take place in Cambridge, Mass.

The Friars resume league play with a home game against Rutgers on Saturday, September 30 in Providence, R.I. PC follows with a home non-conference match-up against Boston College on Wednesday, October 4. The Eagles finished the 2005 campaign ranked 13th in the nation.

On Sunday, October 8, Providence will play the first of four-straight road games vs. BIG EAST foe Louisville in Louisville, Ky. The Cardinals finished the 2005 season ranked 12th in the national coaches' poll. The Friars then head to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on the Orange in BIG EAST play on Friday, October 13. The final two games in the four-game stand are vs. non-conference opponents New Hampshire and Brown. The Friars and Wildcats will play on Sunday, October 15 in Durham, N.H. PC's cross-city match-up against Brown will take place on Warner Roof on Wednesday, October 18.

On Sunday, October 22, Providence will host 2005 BIG EAST Conference Regular-Season Champion Villanova at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Wildcats finished the season ranked 15th in the nation. The Friars will play their final regular-season road game at the University of Rhode Island on Wednesday, October 25.

Providence concludes the regular-season schedule against BIG EAST Tournament Champion Connecticut on Saturday, October 28. The Huskies advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished the year 10th in the national poll.

Of the seven teams in the BIG EAST Conference for field hockey - the top four teams in the final regular-season standings will qualify for the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship. The championship will be held at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky. Semifinal games will be played on Friday, November 3. The winner of each semifinal will advance to the championship game on Sunday, November 5. The winner of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be awarded the league's automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Tournament.
