PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A total of five Providence College field hockey players were named to the 2006 NFHCA All-Northeast Region Teams. The announcement was made by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Monday, November 13. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.), senior midfield/forward Melissa McGow (Branford, Conn.) and senior midfield/defender Lauren Sickel (Plaistow, N.H.) each were named to the First Team, while junior forward Abby Maguire (Southbury, Conn.) and junior defender Michalagh Stoddard (Norwood, Mass.) earned Second-Team recognition. Chamberlain, McGow and Sickel will move forward and be placed on the ballot for All-America honors.
Providence's five selections to the All-Region team are tied for the most all-time in program history. In 1990 and 1991, Providence also had five players named to the All-Region team. In addition, PC's three First-Team All-Region selections are tied for the most in program history with the 1987 and 1990 teams, who also earned three First-Team honorees.
Chamberlain finished the 2006 season with a 16-4 overall record and was named the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year. In 1,400 minutes of action in the cage, she made 100 saves and allowed just 25 goals for a 1.25 goals against average and a 0.800 save percentage. Seven of her 16 wins on the year were shutouts. According to the NCAA Division I Statistics, which were released on November 12, Chamberlain ranks eighth in the nation in goals against average (1.25 GAA) and fourth in the nation in save percentage (0.800). Chamberlain became the first Friar ever to earn Goalkeeper of the Year honors in the BIG EAST, and just the third player in program history to earn one of the league's major awards. She also earned All-BIG EAST First-Team honors.
McGow led the team in each offensive category this season with 11 goals, 16 assists and 38 points. Each of those totals tie her career highs for a single season, which she achieved in 2004. McGow also finished the season tied for first on the team in game winning goals (four) and was first in defensive saves (three). On Friday, October 13, McGow became the eighth player all-time in program history to eclipse the 100-point plateau, as she tallied two assists in a 2-0 victory over Syracuse. McGow finishes her career at PC sixth on the all-time scoring list with 111 career points on 35 goals and 44 assists. She also is tied for seventh all-time in goals scored (35) and second all-time in career assists (44). She also is one of only two players in program history to score 35 goals and register more than 40 assists in a career. McGow earns All-Region recognition for the third time in her career. In 2003, she was named to the Second Team. In 2004 and 2006 she earned First-Team All-Northeast Region honors. McGow also is a two-time All-BIG EAST Second-Team honoree (2004, 2006).
Sickel has established herself as one of the top midfielders of all-time at Providence. She is a three-time All-Northeast Region selection and a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree. In 2004, Sickel claimed Second-Team accolades on each squad. She was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and All-Region First Team in 2005 and 2006. Sickel finished the 2006 campaign with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Her 12 points ties her single-season career high, which she established in 2004.
