ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY -- St. John's, which is ranked sixth in the nation, was predicted to win the Red Division of the BIG EAST in the Preseason Coaches' Poll after reaching the Elite Eight of last year's NCAA Championship. The Red Storm enter Sunday's game riding a four-game unbeaten streak, which includes a 0-0 tie at No. 12 Connecticut on Friday. The Red Storm have compiled a record of 4-1-2 overall and a 2-0-1 record in BIG EAST play...St. John's most recent win was a 1-0 victory over Marquette with the single goal being scored by freshman Garry Lewis (Orange Park, Fla.)... St. John's has won the last 15 meetings against the Friars, with the most recent win coming last year when the Red Storm won 3-1 in Providence...St. John's is led in goal by sophomore Jason Landers (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), who has four wins and four shutouts while playing in all seven games. He has a 0.64 goals against average and a .846 save percentage...Graduate student forward Matt Groenwald (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) leads the Red Storm in scoring (nine points) and goals (four).
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE -- Sunday's game will be the Friars' first game this season against a ranked squad. In Friars' most recent game, PC defeated Syracuse, 3-2, on Friday for its first league win of the season. Sophomore Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) scored two goals, including the game winner, to lead the Friars. Senior Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) added one goal ... The Friars enter the game with a 3-0-4 mark. Providence is undefeated through its first seven games for just the third time in the 38-year history of the program and the first time since 1972 ... Providence is the only undefeated team in the BIG EAST ... The Friars will be looking to earn their first win against St. John's since a 2-0 win in 1988 ... Junior Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.), who earned BIG EAST and ECAC goalkeeper of the Week honors for his stellar play last week, has played all seven games this season and has posted an .867 save percentage and a 0.76 goals against average. Lynch leads the team in scoring (11 points) and goals (five). Maduro also is having a strong season with three goals and three assists in seven games.
