KINGSTON, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team opened the season with a 4-0 victory over the University of Maine on Friday, September 2 at Kingston, R.I. The Friars and the Black Bears met in the opening game of the URI/Sheraton Classic. Senior forward Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) led the Friars with his first career hat trick. Junior goalkeeper Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) made two saves and recorded the win.
Lynch opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with an assist by freshman Tim Ritter (Weston, Mass.). He netted his second goal of the first half at 30:13 to give the Friars a 2-0 lead at halftime. Lynch completed the hat trick when he converted a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Sophomore Ryan Maduro (Bristol, R.I.) rounded out the scoring with his first collegiate goal at 85:29.
The four goals scored by the Friars marked their highest offensive output since they opened the 2003 season with a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart. The 4-0 win also was the team's first shutout since a 1-0 win over Seton Hall in 2003.
Providence will return to action in the final game of the URI/Sheraton Classic versus Rhode Island at 2:30 p.m on Sunday, September 4.
