Field Hockey Announces 2005 Fall Schedule

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College field hockey coach Diane Madl announced the Friars' schedule for the 2005 fall season on Wednesday, March 23. The Friars will play a 19 game schedule in 2005, including 13 home games to be played at the College's newly built artificial turf facility in Providence, R.I. The schedule also features five opponents who competed in the 2004 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, and include Northeastern, Iowa, Boston College, Harvard and Connecticut. Each of those games, with the exception of the Iowa and Connecticut match-ups will be played in Providence, R.I.

Providence is one of six teams that competes as a member of the BIG EAST Conference in field hockey. The Friars will host two league games next season against Louisville and Syracuse. PC hosts Louisville on Sunday, October 2 and the Orange on Saturday, October 15. Louisville joins the league as a new member in 2005. Providence will face three league foes on the road. The team faces Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. on Friday, October 7, Villanova in Villanova, Pa. on Sunday, October 23 and Connecticut in Storrs, Conn. on Saturday, October 29.

The Friars open the 2005 schedule with four home games. On Sunday, August 28, the Friars begin play against Ohio. Providence will then host Vermont (Saturday, September 3), Northeastern (Sunday, September 4) and Holy Cross (Wednesday, September 7). PC travels to Iowa City, Iowa for games against Ball State and Iowa on Saturday, September 10 and Sunday, September 11, respectively. Both game will be played on the campus of the University of Iowa.

Providence returns home to face in-state rival Rhode Island on Friday, September 16 and are on the road to face Dartmouth on Sunday, September 18. The Friars comeback to Providence to begin a five-game homestand starting with Boston College on Wednesday, September 21. PC hosts Maine on Saturday, September 24, Colgate on Sunday, September 25, Harvard on September 28 and begins BIG EAST Conference action with Louisville on October 2.

After league games with Rutgers and Syracuse on October 7 and October 15, respectively, the Friars will host their final two regular-season home games against non-conference opponents New Hampshire (Sunday, October 16) and Brown (Wednesday, October 19). The Friars conclude the regular-season schedule with league games against Villanova and Connecticut.

The BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship is slated for the first week in November. The top-four teams in the league will advance to the semi-finals of the championship on Friday, November 4. The winner of each semifinal game will play in the championship game on Sunday, November 6. The 2005 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship will be held Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
