Providence Softball Wins Two Games At Delaware State Classic

LEWES, Del. - The Providence College softball team opened the Delaware State Classic by posting two shutout wins over Delaware State (7-0) and Pennsylvania (9-0) on Friday, March 19 in Lewes, Delaware.

In the first game, junior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched a complete game shutout and struck out 12 batters as the Friars posted a 7-0 victory over the Delaware State Hornets. Providence scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first inning as junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led off with her career-high fourth home run of the season. Senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) also drove in a run in the first inning as she belted one of her two doubles in the game. Van Dusen batted 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs batted in. Freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.), sophomore Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) and freshman Rachel Bartholomew (Coto de Caza, Calif.) also had two hits each.

Providence defeated the Pennsylvania Quakers, 9-0, in the nightcap. Van Dusen pitched six innings, allowed just two hits and struck out nine batters to earn her third win of the season. The Friars continued with their hot bats as they belted out 13 hits en route to the victory. Petersen again drove in the game-winning run as she hit a two-run double down the left field line in the second inning. Petersen, who hit her fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning, finished with three hits and three RBI. Van Dusen hit a two run home run in the fifth inning and finished with two hits and four RBI. Garvin had three hits, two runs and one RBI.

Providence is back in action on Saturday, March 20 when they face Delaware and Stony Brook at the Delaware State Classic.
