Softball Splits At Delaware State Classic

LEWES, Del. - The Providence College softball team played two games at the Delaware State Classic on Saturday, March 20. The Friars were defeated by Delaware, 2-1, in the first game, but rebounded in the nightcap to defeat, Stony Brook, 2-1.

The Delaware Blue Hens scored the only two runs they would need in the second inning as Randi Issacs hit a two-run home run. The Friars scored their lone run in the third inning when junior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) led off with a home run to left field. For Treveloni, it marked her first home run of the season. Junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) had two hits for PC.

On the mound, PC's Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched a strong game as she allowed two runs on three hits and struck out 10 batters. Delaware's Carolyn Sloat earned the victory as she pitched all seven innings, allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven.

In the nightcap, PC earned a 2-1 win over the Stony Brook Seawolves. The Friars scored one run in the first inning and one in the third and held on for the win. Freshman Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) drove in the game-winning run in the third inning as she belted her first collegiate home run. In the first inning, Garvin gave the Friars a 1-0 lead with an RBI single. Garvin finished with three hits, one run scored and two RBI. Petersen increased her hitting streak to 10 games with a double in the first inning. Senior pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) went the distance as she allowed one run on eight hits and struck out eight batters.

Providence will return to action on Sunday, March 21 at the Delaware State Classic with an opponent yet to be determined.
