ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team opened the first day of competition at the Winthrop Invitational on Friday, March 12 in Rock Hill, S.C. Providence was defeated by Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 8-2, and fell in the nightcap, 4-0, to UNC Wilmington.
In the first game, the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back as they posted an 8-2 win. The Friars were led by junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) who continues to swing a hot bat. Petersen finished with two hits, including her third home run of season in the fifth inning. Senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched five plus innings and struck out six batters.
The Friars were dealt a 4-0 loss by UNC Wilmington in the nightcap as Jamie Gostyla pitched all seven innings to earn the win. PC junior pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also was impressive as she allowed three hits and struck out 13 batters in seven innings of action.
