Softball Splits Double Header At Brown, 8-6, 0-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a double header at Brown University on Tuesday, April 29, winning the first game, 8-6 and losing the nightcap, 6-0.

In the first game, the Friars battled back from a 3-0 deficit as they scored two runs in the third inning, five in the fourth inning and one in the sixth to seal the win. PC's fourth inning was highlighted by a two-run double by freshman Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.). Romero batted three for four with four RBI in the first game. Sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) also had three hits to go along with one RBI, while sophomore Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) added two hits and one RBI. On the mound, sophomore Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned the win as she pitched three plus innings, allowed five hits, two runs and struck out two batters. Brown outhit the Friars, 10-8, as Melissa Brown, Laura Leonetti and Jaimie Wirskowski each had two hits.

In the second game, Brown's Uchenna Omokaro pitched a five-hit shutout as the Bears defeated the Friars, 6-0. The Bears scored the only run they would need in the second inning and added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth. Brown was led by Wirzkowski, who had two hits and one RBI. For the Friars, freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) accounted for two of the Friars' five hits. On the mound, junior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) allowed three runs on eight hits and struckout two batters.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, April 30 with a BIG EAST double header at Connecticut.
