Softball Defeated by Notre Dame, 5-1 and 10-1

Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College softball team was defeated twice by the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 5-1 and 10-2, in a BIG EAST double header on Tuesday, April 15 at Raymond Field.

In first game, the Friars got on the board early with two hits and a run in the first inning. Senior Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.) scored the run on a double by freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.). Friar senior pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) kept the Irish off the board until the top of the fourth inning. In that inning, Notre Dame sophomore Megan Ciolli hit her second home run of the season to tie the score, 1-1. The Irish added three more runs to make the score 4-1 after five innings of play. Sophomore Nicole Bartholomew relieved Peterson and gave up one run in her two-plus innings pitched. Willette finished the game going two for three with two doubles and one RBI. Notre Dame freshman Heather Booth pitched all seven innings to pick up the victory. Peterson was given the loss to drop her record to 5-2 on the season.

The second game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Notre Dame was able to score twice on three hits. They would proceed to score twice more in the fifth, then three more times in the sixth to put the game away. Irish pitchers Steffany Stenglein, Carrie Wilsen, and Jessica Sharron combined for the shutout. On the mound for the Friars, junior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) went six innings giving up five earned runs while striking out three. At the plate, Willette went one for two to lead the Friars, while sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) scored Providence's only run of the game.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, April 19 as they play a double header at home against Fairfield at Noon.
