Softball Sweeps Fairfield, 3-1, 1-0 (14 inn.)

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched 14 shutout innings and struck out a career-high 15 batters to lead the Providence College softball team to a 1-0 victory in the second game of a double header sweep versus Fairfield on Saturday, April 19 at Raymond Field. The Friars also posted a 3-1 win in the first game.

In the second game, the Friars scored the lone run in the bottom of the 14th inning as freshman Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) doubled to left centerfield to drive in Van Dusen from second base. Van Dusen improved her record to 5-5. Romero and sophomore Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) each had two hits to lead the Friars. Fairfield pitcher Mellissa Santos also pitched well, as she allowed just one run on eight hits in 13 plus innings of action. Fairfield had several chances to take the lead as Molly Harris led off the sixth, eighth and 10th innings with a base hit, but the Stags could not capitalize.

In the first game, the Friars scored all of their runs in the third inning en route to the win. The Friars belted out five consecutive base hits, including RBI singles by freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.), sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Van Dusen. On the mound, senior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched a complete game, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out four batters to improve to 6-2 on the season. Fairfield got on the board in the fourth inning when Laura Sandonato hit her first home run of the season.

With the wins, the Friars improved to 13-15, while Fairfield moved to 18-22. Providence will return to home action on Tuesday, April 22 versus Dartmouth at 3:00 p.m.
