ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College softball team won its first two games of the season, defeating Niagara, 13-5, and Lehigh, 4-3, on Monday, March 10 at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla.
In the first game, the Friars trailed, 5-0, after half an inning of action, but roared back with 13 unanswered run en route to their first victory of the season. PC scored three runs in the bottom of the first, one in the second, five in the fifth and four in the sixth. Sophomore Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) batted 3-for-5 with one RBI. Sophomores Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) and Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) each drove in two runs on one hit and freshman catcher Elena Romero (Chulz Vista, Calif.) had three RBI on the night.
On the mound, sophomore Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Marguarita,Calif.) pitched five plus innings in a relief effort and allowed four hits, no runs and struck out 10 Niagara batters to earn the win.
In the nightcap, Providence scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 4-3 victory over Lehigh. Senior Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched all seven innings for the Friars and allowed just five hits and struck out 10 batters. Romero and freshman Michelle Willette (Moorpark, Calif.) had two hits each with one RBI. Petersen and freshman Nicole Hull (Portland, Ore.) also drove in one run each for the Friars, who improved to 2-3 on the season.
The Friars will play Quinnipiac and Indiana Purdue, Fort Wayne in the Rebel Games on March 11.
