PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader with Boston College, defeating the Eagles in game one, 1-0, and being defeated in game two, 2-0, on Saturday, March 30 at Providence College's Raymond Field.
In game one, PC freshman pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned her team-leading sixth victory as she pitched a one-hit, complete-game shutout with 11 strikeouts. Bartholomew was just two days removed from pitching her first career perfect game on Thursday, March 28 at Quinnipiac University. The Friars (7-19 overall/1-3 BIG EAST) got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the first inning when, with two outs, sophomore Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) lifted a solo home run to deep leftfield for a 1-0 Providence lead. Van Dusen's homer, her second of the season, was the only hit and run allowed by Boston College pitcher Kim Ryan.
Bartholomew got herself out of trouble in the top of the sixth inning to preserve the victory, striking out the Eagles' Erin Mackey with the bases loaded. Bartholomew struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning to complete the win.
The second game turned out to be another pitchers duel as PC's Van Dusen and BC's Tekae Malandris battled on the mound. Each pitcher threw a complete game but Malandris had the edge when BC's Cara Blumfield doubled home a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning. Malandris limited Providence to just four hits while striking out eight batters. Van Dusen allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out five in the loss.
The Friars return to action on Monday, April 1st when they host Boston University at 2:30 p.m. at PC's Raymond Field in a doubleheader.
