PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Yale University, 4-0, in a 12-inning game on Wednesday, April 3. The contest was the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, but the second game was not played after the 12-inning affair ender after three hours.
PC freshman righthanded pitcher Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched her eighth complete game of the season, throwing all 12 innings and striking out a career-best 15 batters. Bartholomew walked the leadoff batter and the third batter of the 12th inning. With one out and runners on second and third due to a passed ball and wild pitch, Yale's Leah Kelley reached on a fielder's choice as Rina Branner beat the PC infielder's throw home. Yale's Jesseka Bartholomew followed with a three-run homer to centerfield.
The Friars struggled to score a run as twice PC had runners thrown out at the plate. Providence finished with four hits in the contest, one each by freshmen Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.), Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas), Bartholomew and from sophomore leftfielder Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.).
The Friars return to action on Thursday, April 4th when they host Sacred Heart in a doubleheader.
