PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 5th by Fairfield University. The Stags (22-14-1) won, 4-1, in game one and, 7-2, in the second game.
Fairfield used a strong pitching performance by Melissa Santos, who threw a complete game, five-hitter and allowed just a solo home run by PC senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.), who hit her second round-tripper of the season in the fourth inning.
Nelson's homer could have proven more costly to the Stags, because Nelson was due up to bat in the bottom of the third inning with two outs and runners on first and third base. The Friars, though, ran themselves into a double-play to end the inning. Nelson led off the fourth inning with her blast.
Santos held the Friars bats at bay after Nelson's homer, retiring nine batters via the strikeout on her way to her 13th victory of the season. Providence sophomore Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched just three innings and earned the loss.
In game two things did not get any better for the Friars. The Stags touched PC freshman starter Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) for three runs in the second inning when FU catcher Katie Caputi smashed a three-run homer over the fence in left field. Those were the only runs Van Dusen would allow but senior Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) relieved her in the fifth inning and the defense let the senior hurler down. West allowed just two hits in three innings, but four runs - all unearned runs - were scored on eight Providence defensive errors.
The Friars touched starter Marissa Beemer for a run in the fifth, when senior Gwyn Mangini (Gansevoort, N.Y.) singled and scored freshman Jessica Van Nieuwkerk (Delta, British Columbia). PC added their second run in the sixth inning when senior Lynnette Rosa (Newport, R.I.) plated Van Dusen with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to left field.
The Friars return to action this weekend when they travel to Seton Hall University for a noon BIG EAST Conference doubleheader.
