SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader at Seton Hall University on Saturday, April 7th, losing in game one, 6-1, and winning the second contest, 2-1.
The Pirates (13-8 overall/3-3 BIG EAST) touched PC (14-13 overall/2-4 BIG EAST) freshman pitcher Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) for three runs in the third inning and two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and cruised as Misty Beaver threw a complete-game and allowed four hits and struck out six. The only blemish on Beaver's pitcher day was a solo home run by Providence's senior outfielder Lynnette Rosa (Newport, R.I.). The round-tripper was the first of the senior's career at PC.
In game two it appeared that the Friars were being victimized by another outstanding pitching performance as Seton Hall's Christina Shanko had held PC without a run through six innings while the Friars' senior hurler Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had allowed just one run in the contest.
PC scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, though, when SHU errors and senior Kerri Jacklets' (Sayville, N.Y.) third hit of the game scored two Friar baserunners and gave PC the 2-1 lead. West allowed seven hits in the contest and struck out seven batters while giving up just one run. West improved to 5-3 on the season with the win.
The Friars face St. John's University on Sunday, April 8th at 12 noon.
