Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference softball doubleheader with Syracuse University on Saturday, April 21st at PC's Raymond Field. The Orangewomen won game one, 11-2, and the Friars won the second game, 1-0.

In game one, Syracuse's Heather Brown dominated the Friars for six innings, setting down the minimum of 18 batters - three batters per inning - as she was immersed in pitching a perfect game. Her teammates chased PC starter, freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) in the third inning when they scored three runs. They opened the game with a single run in the second inning and added runs in the fourth and fifth innings before closing the game with a five-run seventh inning spurt.

SU centerfielder Christina Holowich was three-for-five at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Secondbaseman Nikki Lincoln was three-for-three and also had two runs scored and two RBI.

Brown lost the perfect game bid with one out in the seventh inning and the Orangewomen leading, 11-0. Providence freshman shortstop Janelle Gervais (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to rightfield. Senior catcher Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.) followed Gervais' hit with her team-leading eighth home run to leftfield, getting the Friars (19-21 overall/3-9 BIG EAST) on the scoreboard.

In game two the game's two pitchers, Tara DiMaggio for Syracuse and sophomore Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) for the Friars, battled in a tight game. In a game the Friars won, 1-0, the two players who led to PC's run where two unlikely heroes. The fifth inning began with a single to rightfield by designated player Van Dusen. She was lifted for a pinch runner at firstbase - by starting pitcher Melissa Peterson. After a sacrifice advanced Peterson to second base, she advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, freshman walk-on outfield Chrissy Iannolo (Syracuse, N.Y.) slapped the ball down the thirdbase line and beat the throw to firstbase. The run-scoring single by Iannolo was her first hit of the season and was also her first RBI and gave PC a 1-0 lead.

Peterson returned to the mound and made the lead stand up. She worked out of trouble when she had two, including in the sixth inning when Shanna Newell tripled down the rightfield line to lead off the inning. Peterson settled in and retired the next three batters to preserve the lead. With the win, Peterson improves to 10-7 on the season and she logged her ninth complete game and her fourth shutout of the year, all which are team-bests.
