Softball Swept By UConn In Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was swept in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 22nd by the University of Connecticut. The Huskies came back in game one to win, 7-3, and won game two, 10-1, in five innings.
UConn (23-18 overall/8-4 BIG EAST) opened the scoring in the first game when they scored a single run in the first inning. Secondbaseman Lisa Gerolamo reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored when pitcher Barb Cook doubled her in.
The Friars (19-22 overall/3-11 BIG EAST) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) reached on an error, was sacrificed to second and scored when sophomore Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.) doubled her home.
PC took a 2-1 lead after the third inning when senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) singled home freshman shortstop Janelle Gervais (Las Vegas, Nev.). The Friars increased their lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Van Dusen doubled to open the hitting and Morin singled her home.
In the top of the fifth inning the Huskies' bats awoke, as UConn took a lead of 4-3 with three runs in the inning. They added two runs in the sixth inning and one in the top of the seventh while relief pitcher Caryn Haskins pitched the final four innings in relief and held the Friars with just two hits.
In the second game UConn continued to hit, scoring one run in the first inning. They chased PC's starting pitcher, Van Dusen, after two outs and five runs had scored in the second inning. The Huskies added a single run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth while the Friars could only score one run - on a Jamie Ferreira (Fall River, Mass.) groundout - in the fourth inning.
