PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader with Quinnipiac University on Tuesday, April 17th at Providence's Raymond Field. The Braves won the first game, 4-1, and the Friars won game two, 5-2.
The Braves (11-19 overall) broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning when with one out Ashley Morgan walked. Centerfielder Stacey Croft hit a line-drive home run to centerfield to give Quinnipiac the 3-1 lead. The following batter, Nicole Chaput, followed with a solo home run of her own, to right-center field.
The back-to-back homers chased PC starter Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), who had pitched four and one-third innings and allowed four runs. The Friars (18-18 overall) scored a single run off QU starter Melissa Reynolds, who pitched a complete game and allowed just three hits in earning her fifth victory of the season.
In the second game, PC scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning when senior Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled in teammates Gwyn Mangini and Janelle Gervais. The Friars added a single run in the fourth inning on pinch-hitter Melissa Birmingham (Syracuse, N.Y.) RBI single to right field, which scored pinch runner Marisa Hernandez (Austin, Texas). PC scored the final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when sophomore firstbaseman Amber Carr (Ventura, Calif.) hit her second home run of the season to leftfield.
