Softball Splits Doubleheader With Rutgers

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team split a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader with Rutgers University on Sunday, April 1st, with the Friars winning game one, 1-0, in 13 innings and the Scarlet Knights winning game two, 10-4, in seven innings.

The two teams battled in the first game, going back and fourth without either team able to score in the contest. The Friars' freshman hurler Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) threw her fifth complete game, pitching all 13 innings, and earned her second shutout of the season when her teammates scored in the bottom of the 13th inning. She allowed just six hits, walked one and struck out a career-high 10 Rutgers' batters.

In the bottom of the 13th inning with one out, runners on second and third base and senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) at the plate, Nelson popped the pitch into foul territory in front of the Rutgers dugout. Knights' firstbaseman Megan Antonucci caught the ball in front of her dugout and her catcher and fell into the dugout. When she fell into the dugout, she was ruled out of play, the ball was ruled dead, and the PC base runners allowed to advance one base with Van Dusen scoring the winning run.

In the second game, Rutgers scored four unearned runs off PC starter Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the first inning. PC responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, two of the runs coming on senior catcher Kerri Jacklets' (Sayville, N.Y.) sixth home run of the season. Rutgers touched West for four more runs in the second inning and Van Dusen relieved in the third. The freshman pitched five innings and allowed just two unearned runs while striking out five more hitters.

Rutgers' Brielle Cosentino pitched the complete game and earned the win.

The Friars (12-10 overall/1-3 BIG EAST) return to action on Tuesday, April 3rd when they host Hartford University.
