Cancelled Event: Softball versus Tarleton State

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team defeated the University of Hartford in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 3rd at PC's Raymond Field complex. The Friars won the first game, 3-2, in nine innings and took the second game 2-0.
Hartford (5-5 overall) scored first in game one, as Jodiann Palmieri singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on Monica Evrard's double in the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, the Hawks increased their lead to 2-0 when thirdbaseman Kim Schwimmer reached on an error and scored on Alex Picillo's double.
Providence pulled to within one run in the bottom of the sixth inning on senior Nicole Nelson's (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) first home run of the season, a solo blast over the 190-foot mark on the left-field fence. The Friars tied the contest in the bottom of the seventh inning when sophomore Sarah Morin (Westerly, R.I.) walked, advanced to second on classmate Jamie Ferreira's (Fall River, Mass.) sacrifice, and one out later scored on senior Gwyn Mangini's (Gansevoort, N.Y.) double. The Friars won the contest in the bottom of the ninth inning when sophomore Amber Carr (Ventura, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk, was pinch-run for by freshman Marisa Hernandez (Austin, Texas). Hernandez promptly stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Morin. She scored when Ferreira singled past the shortstop to win the game.
Sophomore Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.) pitched two innings of perfect relief, striking out two batters to earn the victory and improve to 6-4 on the season. Freshman Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) pitched the first seven innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, one earned run, three walks and seven strikeouts.
In the second game, the Friars scored its two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.) tripled to centerfield and drove home freshman Janelle Gervais (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Mangini.
Peterson pitched a complete-game, seven-inning shutout, as she allowed six hits and struck out three batters.
The Friars return to action on Thursday, April 5th when they host Fairfield University at 2:00 p.m. at Raymond Field.
