OSCEOLA, Fla. -- The Providence College softball team needed nine innings to defeat the University of Detroit Mercy and was able to win their fifth contest in six games at the 2001 Rebel Games, 7-6, over the Titans.
Senior Gwyn Mangini (Gansevoort, N.Y.) singled and scored in the first inning on a Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) two-out single. Van Dusen scored the Friars' second run of the game when senior Lynnette Rosa (Newport, R.I.) singled her home in the third inning.
The Titans had tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning and trailed, 3-2, in the top of the fourth inning after senior Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, N.Y.) doubled in classmate Kerri Jacklets (Sayville, N.Y.).
Providence turned things over to Van Dusen, as the rookie hurler kept the Titans at bay until the fifth inning. After an error, a hit batter and a single started the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore Melissa Peterson (Los Alamitos, Calif.) relieved Van Dusen and got a double-play and a strikeout to end the threat.
PC didn't score for the rest of regulation and looked to be cruising to a victory when the Titan's struck in the bottom of the seventh. Stephanie Strauss led the inning off by reaching on an error. She advanced and scored two batters later on back-to-back singles. That run tied the contest at 3-3 through seven innings.
Providence added three runs in the top of the eighth inning when Jacklets followed a run-scoring fielder's choice with a two-run home run, her third of the season. The Titans touched Peterson and the Friars in the bottom of the eight inning, though, tying the score at 6-6 with a three-run inning of their own.
PC added the final run of the game in the ninth inning when Nelson scored on a groundout and senior Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) retired the final two batters of the night to nail down the victory and record the save.
Providence closes out action at the 2001 Rebel Games on Saturday, March 10 when they face Troy State University at 9:00 a.m. and the University of Pennsylvania at 11:00 a.m.
